The Beginning of our Retirement - 21 December 2013

Settlement day for the sale of our house was 23 December 2013. The previous week we packed what was left of our furniture, etc into a container and had it transported to the container hire facility for storage. Morning of the 23rd we moved our van to Lawnton Showgrounds - to be our base for the next couple of days.

We spent Christmas Day with family at Toowoomba then headed out to the Jondaryan wool shed on the 27th for a gathering of Kedronners for New Years celebrations.  New years eve was a fantastic night with a few ales under the belt we danced and laughed into the wee hours of 2014.

We then headed to Crows Nest & stayed in the caravan park for a few nights with Craig & Wendy.  They went sightseeing and we did some house shopping & even made an offer on a two year old home.  It all became a little complicated so we dropped the idea for now and decided to look around some more, but we both like the idea of living in the Toowoomba/Crows Nest area.

It was then down the range to Hunting Lodge Estate to camp by the creek for a couple of days.  The heat was horrendous and reached over 40c several times on this trip.

Since finishing work luck hasn't been on our side with a list of things breaking down.

1:   Hot water system leaking.  It was only 4 months old & the tank had split. Replaced under warranty.

2:   Compressor fridge icing up and struggling with heat. Fridge whisperer said it had a gas leak and we'd be better replacing it. $2,045 plus install which required cabinet to be made 200mm taller.

3:   Washing machine pouring water out while filling. Parts not available so new one required.  $345 plus install which was tricky as it also was a bit bigger.

4:   Satellite dish for TV fitted as planned months ago. $5,300.

5:   Van brakes had been coming on while climbing Toowoomba range & believed to be caused by increased heat under bonnet causing circuit breaker to fail.  New higher amperage one fitted.

6:   Cruiser blowing excessive smoke at times & lacking a little power.  Diesel specialist said car is running perfectly but I was the problem. (Deb tells me that all the time). Apparently I drive it too carefully and this caused some blockage of crap in the exhaust.  To remedy this I am to drive it harder and once a month or so to get out on the highway and redline it in 1st, 2nd & 3rd to clean it out.

7.  While getting the sat dish fitted I reversed back to hook the van up and ran over the strap attached to my kayak on the roof. This broke the kayak loader and put a significant ding in the left front guard.  I said a few choice words as this was getting beyond a joke.  $850 to have bumper tech come and repair this & a couple of small dents.

8:   Then, while driving into Chermside we began to smell something burning & thought it was another car.  The smell got stronger so we pulled over to check.  Opened the bonnet and found nothing. Opened the back door and saw flames coming out of the battery box behind the fridge.  A circuit breaker inside the lid came in contact with the terminal and shorted out.  I changed the circuit breaker & had it all replaced.

I don't know how many Chinamen I've run over but enough's enough!  This retirement is supposed to be fun, so Monday 20th January we pack up from Lawnton & head north towards Hervey Bay to stay with Laurie & Helen for a few days.  Let the fun begin!!!

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER NORTHERN NSW

2013

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER NORTHERN NSW

SATURDAY 24 AUGUST - PETRIE TO COPETON WATERS (NEAR INVERELL NSW) - 500klms

Traveled out through Warwick stopping at Sutton’s Shed CafĂ© near Stanthorpe for lunch which consisted of home made pea & ham soup with fresh bread followed by their incredible apple pie & cappuccino.

On arrival at Copeton Dam we set up right on the waters edge out on a point.  It had a white sandy beach with a wide variety of birdlife all around us.  There was one other small group camped about 200metres away but they were due to leave the next day.

SUNDAY 25 TO 29 AUGUST – COPETON WATERS NSW

Gordon & Chris joined us Sunday afternoon. I caught a nice yellow belly in the kayak, we went for several walks, a paddle across the lake where we entered a beautiful inlet & saw wild goats grazing along the shores.  There were hundreds of fairly large roos in the park, as well as deer with some good-sized antlers.  Sammy wanted to go and play with them all.

We had perfect weather with cool nights and clear warm days.  We virtually had the place to ourselves and can’t believe there wasn’t more people there.

THURSDAY 29 AUGUST TO MONDAY 2 SEPTEMBER – BINGARA ON BANKS OF GWYDER RIVER – 50 klms

We set up in one of our usual spots but a little back from the waters edge as the ranger at Copeton advised they would be letting out some water for irrigation in the next few days.  We have had varying reports of how high it may get so we plan on watching it closely.

I excused myself from my diet for one day as I had to have a Bingara Bakery pie & apple turnover, they are to die for.  And my dietician would probably say I could!  But you’ve got to enjoy life & I promised myself to get back on the diet and be good from now on.

Again great weather made this a beautiful stay and we always enjoy this location despite Debbie & I both having the flu again.

MONDAY 2ND TO WEDNESDAY 4 SEPTEMBER - BINGARA TO PILLIGA BORE NSW - 209klms

A rather cool 3 degrees while packing up to move on to Pilliga.  We left via the show grounds to empty tolets & fill water tanks.  Martin & Amanda went via Tamworth to get a door handle replaced & would be meeting us at the bore.

To our surprise there was quite a crowd camped at the bore, as in the past there was only one or two others there.  We still managed to circle the wagons & have quite a nice camp spot only metres from the bore pool.  The water was a beautiful 40 degrees, crystal clear and they now clean the pool of any slime once a week, which makes it a much more pleasant experience.

On the Tuesday we walked 2.7 klms along the Wetlands Walk into town and had lunch at the cafe then back along the road approx 1.6klms.  The dogs as well as humans had a good walk and the cafe food was quite good.  A good soak in the pool was well deserved after this.
Sammy cooling off after the walk

We were blessed with perfect weather and our camp fires were enhanced by the superb display of stars every night.  Now, this is living!!!

WEDNESDAY 4 SEPTEMBER - PILLIGA TO BURREN JUNCTION - 41 klms

The dirt road north to Burren Junction was pretty good most of the way, but got a little corrugated towards the end & we broke one our Kedron mugs, damn it.  There was quite a few camped here as well but I was told that it was packed to capacity about a week earlier.  Thank God we missed that.  It looks like we 'll have to venture to even further remote locations for some peace & quiet.  The whole area is covered in mexicans heading home at present.  We should start taxing them!!!

The bore baths here are almost 6' deep and the algae is not cleaned off, but the water is still very clear.  The amenities with flushing toilets were basic, but fairly clean at the time of our visit.  It's very relaxing laying in 40 degree water under a warm spring sky.  At here and Pilliga it is free camping but they do have donation boxes which we support as it goes to the local communities who provide & maintain these sites.  They have also provided taps all around the perimeter of this camp & a dump point on site.  What more could you ask for?

THURSDAY 5 SEPTEMBER - BURREN JUNCTION TO LIGHTNING RIDGE - 161klms

Gordon & Chris had to leave us here as they had appointments to attend to.  It was great having them along and hope to meet up again some time soon.

We headed west from Burren Junction to Walgett where there is a good overnight stop, but we just stopped for smoko & continued on to Lightning Ridge.  We checked into the new park located across from the thermal pools.  Reasonably priced & excellent amenities.

We went for a dip in the thermal pools but didn't last long as they are quite hot, so it was back to the park & cool off in the pool.  Nice!!

FRIDAY 6 SEPTEMBER - LIGHTNING RIDGE

Friday we went for a drive around town & checked out the Green Door tour, which was nothing spectacular so we drove just south of town to check out the Lorne Station camp.  This was only $10 per night but looked rather feral compared to what's in town.

Debbie had to take a pair of earrings back to the Opal Cave as a small opal had fallen out of the setting. As usual we couldn't resist spending some more of the kid's inheritance & I purchased a beautiful green opal ring.  Whooops!!  Blew the budget again.

SATURDAY 7 SEPTEMBER - LIGHTNING RIDGE

Deb & I went for about a 6klm walk into town & had an iced (skinny for me) coffee.  I think Sammy thought he was going to die, as it was 33 degrees and no water for him to jump into anywhere along the way.

Some entertainment was provided on the lawn in the Opal Caravan Park by Willy-Not-Nelson & his partner.  It wasn't bad and all they asked for was a donation for the 2 hours that they were there.  We then moved to the camp kitchen to watch the federal election results & have a BBQ dinner.  Labour was punished for it's bad behaviour and on-going in fighting over the last few years.

SUNDAY 8 SEPTEMBER - L/RIDGE TO KAPUNDA FISHING PARK - 230klms

We packed up camp, topped up our water, emptied the loo, did a small shop for supplies & headed off up the highway to meet up at Angeldool, a supposed ghost town, with Martin & Amanda who went via the dirt road for something different.  It turns out the ghost town is nothing to see at all so we met them at Hebal on the Queensland border.  Not much here, but a little store that serves great food with friendly service.  The historic pub across the road is worth a look also.  It was typical of many outback pubs with all sorts of paraphernalia over the walls.  This section of road is quite good all the way to St George.

Kapunda Camp is 9klms east of St George and at $20 per night it's a great spot on the river with clean amenities and fires permitted.  Kayaking is excellent here and we continued to be blessed with perfect weather with nights down to 12 & days up to 33 degrees.

MONDAY 9 SEPTEMBER - KAPUNDA

Deb, Sammy & I went for a 2 hour paddle up river which was most enjoyable and although exercise was partaken, it was very relaxing.  The clear blue skies, cool (although muddy) waters and the sounds of various birds in the trees along the way made it a most pleasurable trip.  Oh, I love this sunburnt  country, though it can be quite cruel out here in summer.

TUESDAY 10 SEPTEMBER - KAPUNDA

We went for a walk along the river in St George, while Martin & Amanda went to the Riversands Winery.  We stopped & had morning tea at a little sidewalk cafe and back to the car covering over 6 klms.

A couple set up camp beside us and joined in around the campfire for a few ales.  Brian & Jenny were cattle & sheep graziers from Lake Bogar near Swan Hill.  Nice people who offered for us to drop in and camp beside their creek anytime we are passing that way.  We hope to be able to take them up on the offer next year on our way to Adelaide once we are retired.

WEDNESDAY 11 SEPTEMBER - KAPUNDA TO NINDIGULLY PUB - 48 klms

A nice short run today and the road is very good bitumen all the way.  They have recently installed bollards and a concrete walking track to protect the river front as it seems to be quite popular with the nomads as it's free and across from the pub.

We only planned to spend the one night here and you wouldn't believe it, the Cystic Fibrosis rally was in town tonight.  So there was plenty of entertainment into the night.  We enjoyed dinner & a few wines and marvelled at the giant truckie burgers that weighed in around 5kg & cost $60 each.

THURSDAY 12 SEPTEMBER - NINDIGULLY TO WOODFORD VIA BOONAH - 570klms

Martin & Amanda said goodbye & headed back home today as they had some business issues to sort out.

What a day!  Our intention was to travel 420klms and stay at Yarramalong camp ground for the last 5 days of our holidays.  But unfortunately, what we found was nothing like the website.  The amenities were filthy, there was rubbish scattered about & much of it had been there for quite a while.  We required sun for the solar panels and the only open area was on a oval several hundred metres from the water.  They had a generator running nearby that was a large diesel type which was making one hell of a racket.  We quickly decided this was not a suitable place to spend the last few days of our holiday so we started heading for Imbil (near Gympie) after consulting with David & Stella who were going to join us for some kayaking on the river.

We planned on stopping overnight at the Kilcoy free camp, but this has been closed & you are directed to go to the show grounds instead.  So we continued on to the Cruice Park rest area near Woodford.  While walking around trying to find level ground, I had just turned my torch off and tripped A over T on a pile of rocks and landed very hard on my left shoulder.  Lucky I'm tough and sucked it up and carried on.

FRIDAY 13 SEPTEMBER - WOODFORD TO ISLAND REACH CAMP @ IMBIL - 80klms

We started out around 0630hrs and went via Melany & Kenilworth and were held up several times with roadworks on the ranges.  I must remember not to go this way with the van on as it's very steep in places & quite rough.  The camp ground was quite busy but we were fortunate enough to get our usual spot on the waters edge.  I love this place for the bird life, tranquility and scenery and hope this stays as it is.  Places like this are few & far between.

SATURDAY 14 TO MONDAY 16 SEPTEMBER - IMBIL

On Saturday Dave, Debbie, Sammy & I walked up to the lookout from camp.  About 4.5 klms but very, very steep.  Had to stop & admire the view several times on the way up.

Sunday morning and Craig & Wendy arrived for a paddle up the river.  We went about 5klms upstream having to drag the kayaks over half a dozen or so shallow rocky sections.  It was very enjoyable as the water was clear, there were no weeds due to the recent floods and the rainforest came right to the waters edge in most places.  It ended up being a 4 hour trip and well worth the effort.

Monday was overcast with a storm late in the night.  Deb, Sammy & I walked into town for lunch at a cafe but other than that it was a rest day.  Particularly as it was our last full day here.  :-(

TUESDAY 17 SEPTEMBER - IMBIL TO PETRIE

Well it rained most of the night and it was time to return to reality with doctor's appointments, washing & ironing to do, all in preparation for the other temporary part of our lives...........work.

April - May 2013 - Myall Lakes / Clarence Town

5 May - Plainlands to petrie

While it's nice to get home, being on the road is our dream and what we enjoy most.  We now look forward to our next adventure in late August 2013.

4 May - Bluff Rock to Plainlands

We took the scenic route through Alora & down the range.  Probably a bit slower but a hell of a lot more interesting.  We were invited to stay at Martin & Amanda's new place for the night some time ago but this is the first opportunity we've had.  It's located in a new acreage estate just west of Laidley and their house & extra large shed was very nice.  We had some good food & a few drinks for our last night of this wonderful holiday.

3 May - Bingara to Bluff Rock Rest Area south of Tenterfield NSW

Sadly it was once again time to leave this wonderful place as we packed up and headed for home.  We stopped in to Copeton Dam to check out the camping options for future trips.  The NSW government has spent an enormous amount of money building new facilities and tidying this place up.  It was $20 per van a night at the time of our visit and it appears to be quite a set up with 2 dump points, various camping areas at the waters edge, camp fires, walking trails & hire boats and new ammenaties.  Probably worth a visit next time for a week or so.  We pulled into the Bluff Rock Rest area around 3pm which is a roadside stop but quite scenic & the passing traffic was not a problem.  It got down to about 6 degrees overnight, so winter is on the way and it can go well below zero around here.

28 April - 2 May - Bingara on the Gwydir River NSW

We left the lake and headed off via Tamworth where we stopped for lunch at the Tavern behind the big guitar.  The meals here are massive and of good quality.  Martin & Amanda joined us for lunch as they were having some work done on the Silverado.  We veered off the highway and went via Upper Bingara to pick up some fire wood, a bit dusty but a nice drive.  We entered the usual camp about 4 klms from town and found the river was down a fair way and didn't look very inviting at all.  So we headed back to one near the water treatment plant which is very picturesque.

The next day we went for a long paddle up stream crossing several sand bars and enjoyed the serenity of this beautiful river with it's abundant bird life.  Martin & Amanda joined us that afternoon.  We must mention the fantastic weather we have had since leaving home, we couln't ask for better with blue skies, cool nights around the camp fire and warm days in the kayaks.

On Wednesday May 1st Martin & Amanda dropped Craig & Wendy, Debbie & I about 12 klms upstream from camp with our kayaks for a paddle back downstream.  Unfortunately the water was quite low and there were more than a dozen places where we had to hop out & drag the kayaks over rocks & sand bars.  It was quite difficult in places & hard on the ankles & feet, but what a great time we had.  At on point Deb & I tried to go between two rocks in a rapid and ended up tipped on our side between them.  I fell into the freezing water and screamed like a girl, but man was it cold!  We had a combined dinner this night of roast lamb on the pig, spuds with sour cream followed by apple crumble & cream.  All prepared by our expert on site chefs.  We hate ruffing it :)

Craig & Wendy departed on Thursday morning, so the rest of us declared it a day of relaxation.  Debbie was mostly over her dose of the flu, but I was in the midst of it. Yuk!  Tonight is pizza night cooked by the local baker & they are to die for.

26-27 April - Lake Saint Claire NSW

We said our goodbyes to Geoff & Joy and wished them well in their transition to becoming Queenslanders in the near future.  We travelled through some beautiful country to Clarencetown.  The bridge in town was only just wide enough for the vans, which seems to be a thing in NSW as many bridges challenge to your ability to go through narrow spaces.  The caravan park here has a nice section beside the river but as it was still school holidays, it was packed.  But one to keep in mind for future travels.

We continued on to Lake Saint Claire near Singleton.  It was quite busy here also, but we managed to find a reasonable spot about 50 metres back from the water.  Skiing, sailing, fishing & kayaking were the order of the day.  We paddled around a ridge and found the peace and quiet of a large bay area where the water was smooth as glass and a small creek wandering off to the base of the mountains.  I had a bit of a fish without success, but I don't think anybody else was having much luck either.

24-25 April - Mungo Brush to Tea Gardens NSW

Headed down to Geoff and Joy's place and to pick our baby up again.  Sammy had had a ball playing with other dogs, a trip to the beach where the dog sitter caught some fish and then cooked them up with some pasta for the dogs dinner.  Talk about spoilt.  We set up camp on a vacant block beside Geoff's place which backs onto the water.  It was great to catch up with them again but unfortunately Joy had a cold and didn't feel too well.  Geoff cooked up a piece of marinated lamb on the BBQ which was enjoyed by all.

The next day Craig and I went out fishing in the kayaks in hope of catching lunch.  We paddled about a kilometre against a pretty strong current to some wrecks but the couldn't stay there as the tide was too strong.  We fished about for a couple of hours with me missing a nice flathead and Craig lost one and almost caught another.  Just as I was heading back in Craig scored a few whiting, enough for a break snack.  That night we cooked up marinated beef & lamb ribs with vegies and washed it all down with a few ales.

22-23 April - Coopernook SF to Mungo Brush in Myall Lakes NP NSW

Being a NP we had to drop Sammy off at a dog sitter in Tea Gardens.  A very sad moment.  It was fairly busy at Mungo Brush as it was still school holidays in NSW but the gremlins (children) weren't too bad.  We paddled about 2 klms to a little beach on the the lake and back on the first day. Very nice and a bit of exercise at last.  Day 2 went for a drive to explore other camp areas and look for a fishing spot.  I went down a sand track to check out the beach and ended up having to let the tyres down to 12 lb to turn around.  It was absolutely beautiful on the beach so we stayed for a couple of hours and had a go at fishing.  Craig caught a dart and I scored a slightly undersized bream.  After lunch we went for a rainforest walk out of camp and ended up tromping through scrub to try and find a way around the flooded tracks.  We eventually returned via the road.  A few drinks watching the sun go down over the lake is pretty special here.

21 April - Tyndale to Coopernook State Forest NSW

Well, no hangover at least.  It was a pretty good run as the Pacific Highway upgrades are mostly complete in this section.  This free camp spot is a large flat area in the forest & the dirt road in is in good condition.  There's only one basic drop toilet & fires are allowed.  It cooled off pretty early so we sat around a really nice fire and had a few drinks & ports.

18-21 April - Petrie to Tyndale NSW

Left Petrie approximately 10am Thursday 18 April - on the road again - Yah!!!  You can see that Sammy is just thrilled to be back in the car travelling - NOT.  Hoping that the car sick tablets will help convince him it's a good thing:).  Heard a rattle from under the car & found the shockie that ARB replaced had not been tightened properly.  We called in to ARB at Hendra & Matthew came out & fixed it for us.  The car sick tablets worked a treat & Sammy slept most of the way.  We stopped for lunch along the way & pulled into Tyndale around 3pm.  After setting up camp behind the roadhouse in the van park, we joined Bev & Trev for a few ales & a drop of port before bed.

Woke to a foggy Friday morning, had bacon & eggs, then took Sammy for a walk.  Beautiful weather at long last.  Later we went for a drive to Minnie Water & a short stroll on the beach.  Basically a fishing village with not much else there.  A nice drive just the same.  Trevor cooked t-bones & a chilli con carne with quite a bit of fire in it, YUM!!  Debbie made a veggie bake that was to die for.  For some reason we both seem to be sleeping like babies.

Saturday, Trevor's 60th birthday, another beaut morning, sunny skies & a cool breeze.  Party tonight!
